3 Simple Home Fixes That Made My House Safer and More Comfortable

Small changes around the house can make a surprisingly big difference. Some upgrades are complicated and expensive, but others take just a few minutes and immediately improve everyday life.

None of these required a full renovation — just a few practical upgrades that made the house safer and more comfortable.

Fix #1: Adding Stair Treads to Slippery Hardwood Stairs

Hardwood stairs look beautiful, but they can also be very slippery.

In my case, I learned that the hard way after falling down these exact stairs. The smooth finish on wood stairs combined with socks can turn a staircase into a hazard, especially if you’re moving quickly.

Here’s what the stairs looked like before adding stair treads.

The wood surface was smooth and polished, which looked great but didn’t offer much traction.

To fix the problem, I installed non-slip stair treads designed for hardwood stairs.

These are simple peel-and-stick treads that add grip without damaging the wood. Installation took just a few minutes per step, and the difference in traction was noticeable immediately.

What I like about this solution:

  • Adds grip when walking in socks
  • Helps prevent slipping
  • Protects the wood surface
  • Easy to remove later if needed

If you have hardwood stairs and have ever worried about slipping, stair treads are one of the easiest safety upgrades you can make.

Fix #2: Plug-In Pest Repellers for Small Bugs

Another small problem many homes deal with is bugs sneaking inside.

Depending on where you live, that might mean ants, spiders, or other small insects appearing where you least expect them. While there are many pest control solutions out there, one of the simplest things I tried was plug-in ultrasonic pest repellers.

These devices plug directly into a wall outlet and are designed to emit ultrasonic frequencies that pests dislike.

The main reason I like these is the convenience:

  • no sprays
  • no traps
  • no strong chemical smell

You simply plug them into outlets around the house and let them run.

They’re often used in areas like:

  • kitchens
  • garages
  • basements
  • laundry rooms

While they aren’t a magic solution for every pest problem, they’re a simple first step that many homeowners try before moving to stronger pest control methods.

Fix #3: Installing a Mini Tank Water Heater

This one solved one of the most annoying little problems in our kitchen.

Our main water heater is far enough from the kitchen sink that during the winter, we could sometimes wait close to three minutes for hot water. I would turn on the faucet and just stand there waiting — while all that perfectly good water went straight down the drain.

Eventually, we installed a small mini-tank water heater under the kitchen sink. It keeps a small amount of hot water ready right where we actually need it, so we’re not waiting for hot water to make its way across the house every time we turn on the faucet.

It’s not a glamorous home upgrade. You don’t see it unless you open the cabinet under the sink. But it’s exactly the kind of improvement I love: it fixed something that annoyed me every single day.

If the main water heater is far from the sink, it can take a long time for hot water to reach the faucet. In kitchens or bathrooms that are far from the main heater, this often means running the water for a while before it finally warms up.

A mini tank water heater can solve this problem.

These small units install under the sink and keep a small amount of hot water ready at all times. When you turn on the faucet, hot water is available almost immediately.

Benefits of a mini tank water heater include:

  • faster hot water at the sink
  • less water wasted while waiting
  • compact size for under-sink installation

They’re especially useful in:

  • kitchens
  • basement bathrooms
  • garages
  • home bars

Once installed, the difference is noticeable right away because you no longer have to wait for hot water to travel from the main heater.

A note about our water heater: The exact mini-tank water heater we installed is no longer available. I’m leaving it in this post because it’s the one we actually use, and it solved our problem of sometimes waiting nearly three minutes for hot water at the kitchen sink. If I were buying one today, I’d look for a similar point-of-use mini-tank model that fits under the sink.
