The Smart Home Devices That Give Me Peace of Mind
When most people think about smart home devices, they think of colorful lights, voice assistants, or gadgets that make life a little more convenient.
While I love those too, some of my favorite smart home products have nothing to do with convenience.
They help me worry less.
Whether I’m at home, at work, or traveling, these are the devices that give me peace of mind by helping me protect our home from unexpected problems.
Ring Doorbell
If I could only keep one smart home device, it would probably be our Ring Doorbell.
It’s one of those products that quickly becomes part of your everyday routine.
I can see who’s at the front door, check when packages arrive, and answer the door without opening it. If someone rings the bell while I’m away from home, I can still see who’s there and even speak with them through the app.
It’s also reassuring when we’re traveling. Instead of wondering what’s happening at home, I can simply open the app and check the front door.
It’s a small thing, but it gives me a lot of peace of mind.
Why I love it
- Know when packages arrive
- See who’s at the front door
- Talk with visitors remotely
- Check the front of the house anytime

Ring Motion-Detecting Floodlights
Our Ring floodlights are another one of those smart-home devices I appreciate most when I’m not actively thinking about them.
They automatically come on when they detect motion, which is useful around the darker areas outside our house. I like that they do two things at once: they light up the area and give us another way to know when there’s activity outside.
For me, this is less about turning the house into some elaborate security system and more about eliminating those little “what was that outside?” moments. If someone or something moves through the area, the lights handle it automatically.

Govee Water Leak Detectors
Water damage is one of those things you never think about until it happens.
A small leak behind a washing machine or under a sink can cause thousands of dollars in damage before you even notice there’s a problem.
That’s why I added smart water leak detectors throughout our home.
If one detects water, it sounds a loud alarm and immediately sends a notification to my phone.
I hope they never alert me.
But knowing they’re there helps me worry a little less whenever we’re away from home.
Where I placed mine
- Behind the washing machine
- Near the water heater
- Under bathroom sinks
- Under the kitchen sink

Nest Protect Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector
One of my favorite smart home purchases is actually a product you can no longer buy.
We’ve been using the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide detector for years, and I still love it.
Instead of only sounding an alarm inside the house, it can also send notifications to my phone if smoke or carbon monoxide is detected.
That means even if I’m away from home, I know immediately if something needs my attention.
Note: Google has discontinued the Nest Protect. While I still use mine, I’ll update this post if I find a replacement that I personally feel offers the same level of peace of mind.
What I’ll Probably Replace My Nest Protects With
Since Nest Protect has been discontinued, I’ve wondered what we’ll use when ours eventually need replacing. One of the features I don’t want to give up is being able to receive an alert on my phone when I’m away from home.
The First Alert SC5 is the replacement I’ll probably look at first. I haven’t personally used it yet, so I can’t review it based on my own experience, but it has many of the features I’d want in a replacement: smoke and carbon monoxide detection, phone notifications, Google Home integration, and compatibility with existing Nest Protect alarms.
For now, our Nest Protects are still doing their job. But when the time comes to replace them, this is where I’ll probably start.

Solar-Powered Lights on Our Shed
Not everything that gives me peace of mind has to be connected to an app.
We also have solar-powered lights on our shed, and they’re one of the simplest outdoor upgrades we’ve made. Because the shed sits away from the house, that area could otherwise be very dark at night.
The lights charge during the day and give us light outside without needing to run electrical wiring all the way to the shed. I especially like having them there if we need to walk into the yard after dark.
They’re simple, but that’s kind of the point. Sometimes peace of mind is just knowing that a dark part of the yard won’t actually be dark when you need it.

Why These Devices Matter to Me
These aren’t the flashiest smart home products we own.
They don’t make my house look prettier.
They don’t make for exciting demonstrations.
What they do is help me feel more confident when I leave the house.
Whether it’s checking who rang the doorbell, getting an alert about a water leak, or knowing I’ll receive a smoke detector notification if something is wrong, these are the smart home products I appreciate the most.

Each one solves a different problem, but together they’ve made our home feel safer and given me one less thing to worry about.

Final Thoughts
I hope my water leak detectors never detect a leak. I hope my smoke detector never sends me an emergency alert. And I hope our Ring cameras only catch package deliveries, neighborhood cats and friends stopping by.
I also appreciate the simpler things, like having a dark part of the yard light up automatically when we need it. None of these devices are particularly exciting when they’re doing their jobs — and that’s kind of the point.
Knowing they’re quietly working in the background gives me something that’s hard to put a price on: peace of mind.
