Easy Outdoor Party Games Everyone Will Actually Play

Outdoor party games sound like a great idea until you realize not everyone at the party wants to participate in an organized sporting event.

Some people are ready to turn a casual game of volleyball into the Olympics. Other people would much rather stand near the food, talk, and occasionally toss something across the yard.

I am definitely a fan of outdoor games, especially bocce. I love that bocce gives you something to do while still letting you hang out and talk. You don’t have to be particularly athletic, the rules aren’t complicated, and there’s just enough competition to make it fun.

That’s really the secret to choosing outdoor party games: think about how your guests actually entertain.

You don’t need a yard filled with activities. A few good games can give people something to do without making your party feel like mandatory summer camp.

Choose Outdoor Games Based on How Your Guests Actually Entertain

Instead of picking games simply because they’re popular, think about your crowd.

Do they want to stand around and socialize? Do you have a few people who will immediately start keeping score? Are kids and adults going to be playing together?

Here are some of my favorite options for different kinds of party guests.

For People Who Want to Play and Still Socialize

These are probably my favorite kinds of outdoor party games. You can play, talk, grab something to eat, come back for another round, and generally enjoy the party at the same time.

Bocce Ball

Bocce is easily one of my favorites.

The basic idea is simple: toss the small target ball, called the pallino, and then take turns trying to get your bocce balls closest to it.

That’s it.

Of course, once everyone gets into it, there’s plenty of strategy involved. You can knock another person’s ball out of position, block a good shot, or somehow make what looked like a terrible throw work in your favor.

It’s competitive without requiring everyone to spend the afternoon running around the yard.

Why I like it for parties:

  • It’s easy to learn.
  • People can talk while they play.
  • You don’t need to be athletic.
  • A game can be casual or surprisingly competitive.
  • A bocce set is easy to bring outside when you need it and put away afterward.

If you’re only buying one outdoor game for a more relaxed backyard gathering, bocce would be high on my list.

  • Complete 100mm Bocce Ball Set: Includes 8 resin balls (4 red and 4 green – 100 mm / 988g, 2.18 lbs), 1 white pallino (50mm / 120g), 1 measuring rope and a carrying bag. Each color has 2 unique patterns—circle and straight line—ideal for 2 to 8 players. Perfect for casual games on lawn, beach, or in the backyard

Cornhole

Cornhole may be one of the easiest outdoor party games to put out because most people already know what to do.

Set up the boards, put out the bags, and somebody will eventually start playing.

It also works well when guests are arriving because you don’t necessarily need to organize an official game. Two people can start tossing bags while everyone else is talking, and other guests can join in later.

For a cookout, tailgate, birthday party, retirement party, or casual backyard get-together, it’s hard to go wrong with cornhole.

For Guests Who Want a Little Competition

Every party has them.

You say, “We could play a game,” and five minutes later someone is discussing teams, rules and whether that last point actually counted.

Give those people something to do.

Volleyball

If you have enough space, volleyball is a great choice for a larger outdoor party.

Unlike bocce and cornhole, this is the game that can become an actual party activity. Guests can divide into teams, spectators can watch, and people can rotate in and out.

A portable volleyball net also makes it possible to set one up in a large backyard or open grassy area without having a permanent court.

The only thing I’d consider is your guest list. Volleyball is much more active than the other games here, so I wouldn’t make it your only entertainment option.

Pair it with something relaxed like bocce or cornhole so guests can choose how involved they want to be.

Ladder Toss

Ladder toss sits somewhere between relaxed lawn game and competitive challenge.

Players toss bolas toward the ladder-style target and score points depending on where they land.

It doesn’t take much space, doesn’t require a lot of physical activity and is easy enough for someone to learn after watching a few throws.

This is another good option if you want a game people can walk over to and play without stopping the entire party.

For the “I’ll Play a Round” Crowd

These are the games for guests who aren’t necessarily looking for an activity but will absolutely play when they walk past one.

Giant Jenga-Style Games

Outdoor wooden Jenga game set up on patio for fun outdoor activity.

There’s something about making a familiar tabletop game enormous that apparently makes all of us want to play it again.

A giant wooden stacking game works especially well on a patio or other relatively flat surface.

Guests can play a quick round without committing to a long game, and watching an increasingly questionable tower finally collapse tends to attract everyone nearby.

Just make sure you have a stable place to set it up.

Giant Connect Four-Style Games

A large four-in-a-row game is another easy option for an outdoor party.

It’s instantly recognizable, doesn’t require an explanation and works particularly well when you have a mix of adults and older kids.

It’s also one of those games that can simply sit off to the side until someone decides to play.

Ideal for parks, beaches, backyards, or moving from indoors to outdoors. Its compact design lets you bring fun anywhere without heavy equipment or complicated setup. Enjoy spontaneous gameplay and create lasting memories with family and friends in any setting.

Ring Toss

Ring toss is simple, inexpensive and doesn’t need much explanation.

It can be especially useful for a party with kids and adults because you can adjust the throwing distance depending on who’s playing.

It’s not going to become the main event of the afternoon, and that’s actually part of the appeal. It’s just something fun to do between eating, talking and everything else going on.

How Many Outdoor Games Do You Actually Need?

Probably fewer than you think.

For most backyard parties, I would choose two or three games with different energy levels rather than filling the yard with activities.

A simple formula is:

One relaxed game + one active game + one easy drop-in game

For example:

  • Bocce + volleyball + giant Jenga
  • Cornhole + volleyball + ring toss
  • Bocce + cornhole + giant Connect Four

This gives your guests choices.

Someone who wants to get competitive can head toward the volleyball net. Someone who would rather socialize can play bocce. Someone who doesn’t really want to “play games” may still wander over to the giant Jenga tower.

Everyone gets to enjoy the party their own way.

Easy Outdoor Game Setups for Different Parties

You can also choose your games based on the type of gathering you’re planning.

For a relaxed backyard party:
Bocce + cornhole

For a big summer cookout:
Cornhole + volleyball + giant Jenga

For a party with adults and kids:
Cornhole + giant Connect Four + ring toss

For a more elegant outdoor party:
Bocce + a nice cornhole set

For a competitive crowd:
Volleyball + ladder toss + cornhole

You don’t have to use every game you own at every party. Choose the ones that fit your guests, your space and the kind of afternoon or evening you’re trying to create.

What to Look for When Buying Outdoor Party Games

If you’re building your outdoor game collection, I wouldn’t buy everything at once.

Start with the game you think you’ll actually use most often.

Look for sets that are easy to store, simple to carry outside and sturdy enough to survive being tossed around the yard. Portable carrying cases are especially useful for bocce, ladder toss and other games with multiple pieces.

For larger games, think about storage before you buy them. Giant games are fun. Giant games that have nowhere to live after the party are slightly less fun.

Some items I personally use, others are well-reviewed picks that fit the post.

Don’t Forget the People Who Aren’t Playing

Not everyone at an outdoor party is going to play every game. Some people are perfectly happy sitting nearby, talking, watching everyone else play and occasionally offering advice nobody asked for.

So when you’re setting up your outdoor games, don’t forget to make the area around them comfortable too.

A few simple extras can make a big difference:

  • Battery-operated or rechargeable fan: Set one near the seating area, food table or wherever people tend to gather. On a hot summer afternoon, this might get more use than the games.
  • Cold drinks nearby: A beverage tub, cooler or drink dispenser keeps everyone from constantly running back inside. It also gives people a natural place to gather between games.
  • Bug control: Citronella candles or your preferred outdoor mosquito solution can make sitting outside much more pleasant once the mosquitoes realize you’re having a party.
  • Outdoor seating: Add a few chairs close enough to the games that people can watch and talk without feeling like they’re sitting in a completely separate area.
  • A place to set down drinks: Small outdoor side tables are surprisingly useful. Nobody wants to figure out where to put their drink before their turn at cornhole.
  • Outdoor lighting: If the party might continue into the evening, string lights or rechargeable outdoor lamps can keep the game area usable after the sun starts going down.

You don’t need to create an elaborate spectator section. A few chairs, cold drinks, a fan and somewhere to set a cup can be enough.

The goal isn’t to keep everyone constantly entertained. It’s to create an outdoor space where people can play when they want to, sit when they want to and still feel like they’re part of the party.

Don’t Overthink the Entertainment

The best outdoor party games aren’t necessarily the newest or most elaborate ones.

They’re the games people see sitting in the yard and naturally start playing.

That’s one reason I’ve always enjoyed bocce. You can make it competitive if you want to, but you can also play while talking and enjoying the party. Nobody has to stop what they’re doing because it’s officially “game time.”

Put out a couple of games, add some food and drinks, turn on some music and let people figure out what they want to do.

Chances are, they’ll entertain themselves just fine.
