Wondering if a split king adjustable bed is worth it? After living with one for several years, here are the things I genuinely love, the quirks you should know about, and a few surprises I never expected.
Most people don’t realize our bed is a split king until one side moves.
We Didn’t Buy It Because It Was Fancy
When we decided to buy a split king adjustable bed, I wasn’t looking for luxury. I just wanted a comfortable bed that would hopefully help us sleep better.
What I didn’t expect was how many little conveniences would become part of our nightly routine.
Is it perfect? No.
Would I buy one again? Absolutely.
Here are the honest pros and cons after actually living with one.
What Is a Split King Adjustable Bed?
A split king is made from two Twin XL mattresses sitting side by side on separate adjustable bases.
That means each person can control their own side of the bed.
Want to read while your spouse sleeps flat? No problem.
Need to elevate your feet while your partner watches TV? You can do that too.
It’s one of those purchases that seems like a luxury until you start using it every day.
It Looks Like a Regular King Bed Most of the Time
One thing people don’t realize is that our bed doesn’t constantly look like an adjustable split king.
When the bed is flat and made with pillows, a comforter, and decorative bedding, it simply looks like a regular king-size bed. Most visitors would never know there are actually two Twin XL mattresses underneath.
The “split” only becomes obvious when one side is adjusted independently or when the bed is stripped down while changing the sheets.
For us, that’s been the best of both worlds—we get all the comfort and flexibility of an adjustable split king without feeling like our bedroom looks overly medical or high-tech.
Because the reading lights are attached to the headboard instead of sitting on the nightstands, the light stays in the perfect position even when the bed is raised. Sleeping on My Back Is Finally Comfortable
I never thought I’d become a back sleeper.
Lying completely flat was never very comfortable for me, but raising the head of the bed just a little makes all the difference.
It feels much more natural, and I actually wake up feeling more rested.
It’s probably my favorite feature because it’s something I use every single night.
Reading and Watching TV Is So Much Better
Remember stacking three pillows behind your back only to have them slowly collapse?
I don’t miss that.
Now I simply raise the head of the bed until I’m comfortable and stay there.

We Can Each Sleep the Way We Want

If I want my head elevated and my husband wants to sleep completely flat, we both get exactly what we want.

Yes…There Really Is a Gap
Let’s address the elephant in the room.
There is a gap between the mattresses.
For everyday sleeping, I hardly notice it.
For cuddling…you’ll definitely notice it’s there.
For intimate moments? Let’s just say laying a folded blanket or comforter across the middle works surprisingly well.
There are also mattress bridges designed to help fill the gap if it bothers you.
Apparently the Gap Belongs to Our Dog
One unexpected side effect?
Our cocker spaniel, Gizmo, has officially claimed the gap as his favorite sleeping spot.
Apparently we spent thousands of dollars to buy our dog his own cozy little nest.
I’m not convinced that wasn’t his plan all along.
Making the Bed Takes More Effort
Instead of one large fitted sheet, you’ll use two Twin XL fitted sheets—one for each mattress.
It isn’t difficult, but it does add a few extra minutes when you’re changing the sheets.
One thing I highly recommend? Sheet fasteners. Trust me. They help keep everything snug and in place, especially since the mattresses are constantly moving up and down. Once I started using them, I wouldn’t want to make the bed without them.
