How My Brother’s Kite Shop Hit #1 on Google for “Organic Cotton Kites” (and What We Did to Get There)
Small site, big win: behind the scenes of a quiet SEO success story
It all started because when you searched “organic kites,” the top result was a children’s pajama set.
My brother — who handmakes actual, flyable kites out of organic cotton — was understandably annoyed.
So we decided to fix it. Not with ads or gimmicks, just simple, honest SEO.
Here’s how we did it (with zero ad spend, zero agencies, and just enough Googling to make my brain hurt).
1. We optimized for the right keyword.
The site doesn’t try to rank for everything. It focuses on exactly what it sells: handmade organic cotton kites.
That phrase — “organic cotton kites” — became the north star. It showed up:
- In product titles and descriptions
- On the homepage and collection pages
- In alt text for product images
- In meta titles and descriptions (via Shopify’s SEO settings)

This wasn’t keyword stuffing. It was just… accurate. Google likes that.
2. We submitted a sitemap (because Google can’t read your mind).
Shopify generates a sitemap for you at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml, but Google doesn’t automatically know it exists.
So I:
- Set up Google Search Console
- Verified the site
- Submitted the sitemap
- Requested indexing for key pages (especially the homepage and featured products)
This step is so easy to skip — but it makes a difference. You’re basically raising your hand and saying, “Hey Google! I exist!”
3. We used Google Analytics to track progress.
Once the sitemap was submitted, I connected Google Analytics 4 to watch what happened next.
I wasn’t expecting fireworks — but sure enough, over a few weeks, impressions and clicks started rising. Organic search traffic became the #1 source of visits.
(And yes, I did a victory dance when “organic cotton kites” showed up as a search query.)
4. We kept the content personal, not robotic.
Yes, I use AI to help draft content, but everything on the site stayed true to my brother’s voice. Product titles and artist info came from him. The copy reflected his values and handmade process.
No spammy filler. No keyword-stuffed paragraphs. Just thoughtful, honest writing that people — and Google — can actually connect with.
5. We let it simmer.
This was not an overnight result. SEO is the slow-cooker of digital strategy.

We made our revisions to the site, made sure the foundations were solid, and gave it time. Google crawled, indexed, tested, and eventually rewarded us.
What You Can Learn From This
You don’t need to be an SEO expert to get results.
You just need to:
- Pick accurate, low-competition keywords
- Use them consistently (but naturally)
- Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console
- Track traffic in Google Analytics
- Make your site easy to crawl and easy to love
…and be a little patient.
Final Thoughts
This win felt extra sweet because it was so simple. No hacks. No black magic. Just a handmade kite business that found its people.
